Our Perception About Physical Exercise
Many of our adults associate exercise only with muscular development and athletics. If not interested in either, he feels that he has no need for any kind of exercise.
He does not realize that controlled use of his body or “exercise” is an absolute requirement for good health and life; not just a method of developing muscles or special skills he will not need. This is as true of women as of men. Women are more interested in their figures than men and because of that are more receptive toward exercise.
Yet, many women are fearful that vigorous exercise will make them muscular and masculine. They seem unaware of the fact that all the good contours of the body are formed by the muscular development of it. The most beautiful women in the world find regular vigorous exercise of the body a necessity. Such effort will not make her “masculine,” but will be of great value in assisting her to acquire and maintain the figure and good health she would like to have. The basic differences in sex are great enough that no amount of training will make a normal woman “masculine” in either appearance or muscular development. Exercise with weight resistance has proven to be of tremendous help to women whose careers require them to have as fine a figure as is possible.
With children we have much the same situation. He also does what he must do and what he likes to do. Left to himself, he would do only what he likes to do! It is the responsibility of the parent to instruct the child and to see that he does the things needed to prepare him for his years ahead. It is most important that the child be given the necessary training to assure him of a strong and healthy body. It is not difficult to interest the child in exercise, but it is difficult to keep him on a regular plan of effort to guide his growth and development.
When a boy becomes old enough to be interested in physical competition, we have a motivation that is very helpful. When a girl becomes old enough to be interested in her figure she also has strong motivation for exercise. Progressive resistance is especially desirable for it combines excellent results with short periods of effort which fits well into the busy schedules of our children today.
It requires some study and effort on the part of the parents to encourage and direct the children in controlled exercise. It may
seem a burden to add this to the other things already planned for them, but the anxiety spared the parents because of their strong healthy physical condition is adequate compensation for the effort.
