In parts one through four of this series, “How to Fix a Slow Crashing Computer,” we talked about cleaning your disk, getting rid of unwanted software, protecting your PC from malicious software programs, and cleaning your registry. Today, I will show you how you can take 5 minutes to reconfigure your computer, and get a quicker start.
Computer systems will often slow down over time due to the number of entries added in the windows start up setting.
Software vendors want to ensure their software starts up every time the computer is switched on. What most people
don’t realize is every time you boot your computer a whole gut of unnecessary hidden programs load in the
background. By disabling these extraneous programs you will be able to regain some of the original performance of your machine. Built into windows is a special tool called Microsoft Systems Configuration Utility or MSCONFIG. It is designed to troubleshoot problems on your PC. But, one of the options gives you the opportunity to turn off some of these unseen programs for improved performance of your PC. To start: type MSCONFIG and press enter. Under the start-up tab you will see a comprehensive list of files which activate the software every time the computer boots
up. For newcomers the list may seem like a load of jumble, but with careful inspection, you will be able to make association with common programs. Un-check the box next to the files you want to turn off, don’t be afraid remember you can always turn it back on. For unknown file
names a quick Google search will provide swift results. Once your done just restart
