Free Insurance Quotes: 3

Are there dirty little secrets guarded by insurance companies that offer free insurance quotes? Well, I can tell you from real experience as a life insurance salesman that insurance companies know things that they do not exactly want us regular folk to know about. Case in point: I was sitting in my office as a financial counselor/ insurance agent some years ago listening to a long term care wholesaler give his product pitch. He says, and I quote (roughly), “The dirty little secret is that most people don’t need long term care insurance.” Just like that. Yet my job as a salesman would have been to tell everyone that they need it. This wholesaler was apparently trying to build trust, I guess, by telling us the ‘real truth’ about long term care, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. However, for those needing auto insurance and looking for free insurance quotes, there really is no choice because such coverage is mandated by law.

But could there be dirty little secrets within the auto insurance industry that they do not want you to know about? I asked a close family member who worked as a customer service representative at a small home and auto insurance. She primarily gave auto quotes by phone. Here is what she said:

“It is less costly for you as a driver to pay out of pocket for smaller amounts. If you are in an accident, you do not have to use your insurance company. Many people think that they must report any accident to their insurance carrier and that is simply not the case.

“Secondly, the insurance company won’t tell you that you can go to traffic school to erase the points so you don’t have to pay increased premiums. Depending on the state you live in, it will be three to five years for that increased fee.” (When I ran a stop sign, I was not made aware that my insurance premiums would increase because of that violation or that I could have the points dropped if I simply would attend traffic school. My increased payments over three years will end up costing me hundreds of dollars. Had I known, I most likely would have gone to traffic school. But they only let you do this once, and it does not apply to driving under the influence violations.

“The third thing you are surprised to know, when you are in an accident and file a claim, you do not have to accept the first offer. There is wiggle room in there for negotiation on the settlement. Whether you use a laywer or haggle on your own, you can usually get a bigger settlement. In my accident, I looked at the adjusters settlement offer and compared it to blue book values and didn’t think it was a fair amount. I said, based on mileage of my car, they were giving me a lowball offer. They ended up making a second offer of about four hundred dollars more.”

So keep these three insider secrets in mind as you obtain your free insurance quotes for your vehicle.
