Israel claims that it’s necessary to end these tunnels because arms are smuggled in, which may be true but the blockades are keeping Palestinians below the poverty line.

Unemployment in Gaza is up to 80 percent and as a result many are forced to work in the tunnels. Even children leave home to work in these tunnels and are promptly hired because many of the tunnels are only 4 feet tall inside. Children are also recruited to dig the tunnels and many are injured or lost when the tunnel falls in with them inside. However the risks are worth it for many children. One child disclosed to have received $100 a day for working in a tunnel.

It’s difficult for these children to refuse because they come from such disadvantaged backgrounds. The money is what drives this business and many children get caught up in it. In this past year alone over 59 Palestinians have died in the tunnels, including children.

Remaining on the East or West side of Germany after the war ended changed the lives of every person. Families were separated and not permitted to see each other for decades. It was only after the Berlin Wall came down 20 years ago that East and West reunited.

East German citizens were only permitted to go to Soviet bloc countries like Hungary, Czechoslovakia and others. Moreover the state was in charge of the press and news was concealed. East Germans never really knew what was going on in the world. They were isolated and didn’t have much exchange with the West side. Individuals were not granted personal, cultural, or political autonomy.

Nevertheless after years of division the wall and Communism came under fire in 1989. After two decades of Communist rule the citizens were rocking the boat. Immediately the news was out and crowds were assembling at Brandenburg Gate. There were pep rallies, people dancing in the streets, parties, and playing as the East Germans exited and crossed into the other side of the wall. For loads of people it was their first time and the enthusiasm was growing.

That night people started chiseling and tearing down the graffiti ridden barrier. Some kept pieces to recollect that day and how their lives had changed. There were students climbing up on the wall. It was a party of not only students, but every generation in East Germany.

Citizens now had the freedom and the opportunity to engage in whatever they wanted. They could travel whenever and anywhere as well as study whatever they wanted. They didn’t have to conceal their religious beliefs and they could stay out however long they wanted. There was no longer a curfew and celebrations went on for a days. The news which narrated how a 64-year-old American citizen was arrested and arraigned in the second week of October, 2009 in Hollywood, Florida, for allegedly coming to the Philippines in 2007 and 2008 to engage in illicit sex with two Filipino girls, should give a strong message that the Philippine government will chase the culprits no matter where they are.

A report from the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida identified the offender as Donald Mathias, a native of Florida. He is facing charges of child abuse. The charges contained in the complaint carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

According to the affidavit filed in support of the complaint, Mathias arranged with the mother of two minor female children in the Philippines to fly to that country in April 2007 and December 2007 to engage in sexual conduct with the minors, and then did so.

Mathias also arranged to travel to the Philippines in December 2008 to again engage in sexual conduct with the minors. Philippine authorities, however, received information about the arrangements and rescued the children before they met Mathias.

In an interview with the Women and Children focal person at the Tacloban City Social Welfare and Development Office, she confirmed about the arraignment saying that it was Fiscal Liza Miscala of the local Family Court who was emailed by her counterpart in the US about the arraignment.

Philippine authorities apprehended the victims’ mother in Tacloban City in December while she and all three of her daughters, aged 9 to 14, were on their way to meet Mathias.

The two elder sisters told police that Mathias previously abused them and they were on their way to meet him again.

The victims’ mother, whose name is being withheld for obvious reasons, was charged with child abuse and trafficking of persons. She is now being imprisoned and prosecuted in Tacloban City. When reached and told about this news, the mother refused to be interviewed saying she would rather keep quiet.

The three girls are now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Haven for Women and Girls in Leyte.

Ms. Bastes said that the arrest of Mathias and the girls’ mother resulted from a tip from a concerned citizen who, with the assistance of the non-government PLAN Philippines, reported the case to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The Social Worker said that the girls and their mother are not really from Tacloban but from Sogod, Southern Leyte. They were arrested in Tacloban, though.

The authorities then coordinated with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Unit at the US embassy in Manila in pursuing the case against Mathias.

Ms. Bastes intimated that the children and a social worker are scheduled to leave for Florida to testify against the suspect.

UNESCO declared a World Day for Audio Visual Heritage to raise awareness of the significance of Audio Visual documents and to draw attention to the need to protect them.

Every year, activities are organized by different institutions worldwide around a theme to drum up interest in the event. This year, the Coordinating Council for AV Archives Associations has adopted as theme “Fading Heritage: We Can Save It.”

AV documents, which are characteristic of the 20th and 21st centuries, have extensive and far-reaching influences in the everyday lives of people around the world. Yet, due to their fragility, much have been lost and continue to be lost.

Documentary heritage reflects the diversity of languages, peoples and cultures. It is the mirror of the world and its memory. But this memory is insubstantial. Every day, irreplaceable parts of this memory disappear for ever.

UNESCO has launched the Memory of the World Programme to guard against collective amnesia calling upon the preservation of the valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world ensuring their wide dissemination.

The Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage which has been identified by the International Advisory Committee in its meetings in Tashkent (September 1997), in Vienna (June 1999), in Cheongju City (June 2001), in Gdansk (August 2003), in Lijiang (June 2005), and in Pretoria (June 2007) and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO as corresponding to the selection criteria for world significance.

Included in the Registered Heritage is Radio Broadcast of the Philippine People Power Revolution, a documentary heritage by Philippines and recommended for inclusion in the Memory of the World Register in 2003.

The collection of sound recordings of 44 audiocassette tapes and 1 mini-disc document the actual, unedited day-to-day radio broadcast of Radio Veritas, (a Catholic -owned radio station at the outskirts of Manila), DZRJ/DZRB, Radio Bandido, (a privately-owned radio station in Quezon City then under the Ministry of National Defense), DZRH (a privately-owned radio station in Manila) and Voice of the Philippines, a government-owned radio station taken over by the people led by Radio Veritas on the 24th of February, 1986.

The People Power Revolution was a unique political event of the 20th century which stirred the world: the peaceful overthrow of an entrenched dictatorship through a spontaneous popular uprising, documented and influenced by the 20th century medium of radio.

The unbroken radio record over four days in 1986 is an unvarnished chronicle of a nation and its people at a pivotal time in its history. The world listened, watched and read. The event will forever be a reference point for the peaceful resolution of deep national crises.
